Giving your child the freedom to travel about on their own wheels will not only help them to feel independent but also grow their confidence. When our own kids started riding on scooters all those years ago there was a much more limited variety of kid’s scooters on offer. Yet over the last 5 or 6 years scooter sales have rocketed and these 2, 3 or 4 wheel contraptions now seem to rule every playground and nursery across the country.
On this page, you can read all about our choices for the best first kids scooters. In terms of appearance, you will be probably looking for a model that will appeal you your child. There are many first scooters for children that come with great designs and some even have characters from their favorite TV programs. Depending on their age it may be worth being a little cautious here and take the time to consider if the character they love now will be just as popular in 6 months’ time. The design and quality of the scooter are fundamental to how much use it will get. A scooter that is heavy and has wheels in the wrong place (i.e. sticking out at the back where they can be kicked) will soon put your child off, so think about your child’s weight and abilities carefully and try to choose a scooter that will work with, rather than against them.
So which are the best first kids’ scooters?
Best First Kids Scooters – Updated List
1. Globber Scooter – Best For Smooth Ride And Durability
This scooter also features in our Top 3 Wheel Scooter category. We love this scooter because it is super lightweight, yet robust at the same time. It has ultra-smooth wheels so speed can be an issue if your little one is just getting used to the feel of a scooter and it is recommended for 3 years+, though we know many 2 year old’s that ride them. It doesn’t fold and is not height adjustable. So why do we love this scooter so much? Once your child learns the technique of riding it they will have great fun on this scooter. It uses a tilt and pivot steering system that means your child is less likely to suddenly shoot off in the wrong direction. It’ll feel more like surfing the pavements than riding a clunky scooter and your kids will love it.
2. Smart Trike Scooter – Best For Heavier Riders
Since they launched the Smart Trike 3 in 1 ride on, this brand of children’s toys has rocketed. They now make a vast array of kids play equipment and the Smart Trike scooter is just one of them. It’ a three-wheeler and comes in the usual pink or blue color options. It has full metal construction to help make it durable and rubber wheels for strength.
The deck on this model is pretty wide giving a firm platform for your child to balance on. It’s lightweight too and is suitable for weights up to 28kgs which is more than most other scooters in this category, so this might be a good choice if your child is larger than average for their size.
3. DJ Bug Junior Push Scooter Tricycle – Great Brand Name And Reputation
There is no denying that JD Bug makes a fab range of scooters, but their usual place in the market is making a good quality ride on scooters, spanning the gap from 5–15 year olds. They do make some good quality stunt scooters and now they are also tipping their toes into the pre-school waters too with this JD Bug Junior. This model is a 3 wheel scooter with a 120mm front and 2x100mm rear wheels. The great news is that JD Bug also provides you with a spare. The frame is made of alloy with the deck made of plastic. The maximum weight for Junior is 20kgs and the weight scooter 2.4kgs, so quite a bit heavier than the Ozbozz. The age range for this model is 3+ years.
4. Vilac Red Wooden Scooter – Best Looking And Sustainable
We felt that it was worth putting this scooter in our list for nostalgia and simply because it just looks so cute. This scooter is manufactured to a high standard but being made of wood this toddler scooter is not going to be able to take much of a bashing without the paint starting to chip, but if like me you don’t mind touching things up now and again then this might be the ride you want to invest in. At just over £50 it’s also not the cheapest of choices, but the colors and the design of this little ride on make it look so pleasing that you might find yourself buying it just for looks! This wooden scooter has easy to grasp handles and 4 wheels to give a really sturdy ride. You can also feel you have done your bit for the environment too when you buy this scooter because its made from sustainable woodlands and uses non-toxic lacquer. This wooden scooter would make a fabulous gift.
Whichever kids scooter that you decide to buy, ensure that you also purchase the appropriate safety equipment too. These days it’s easy to find helmets and pads for even the smallest kids. To start with your toddler is likely to need lots of reassurance but before long they will be surfing the streets and enjoying every minute.
